Kokkinos Pirgos means Red Tower in Greek and it took its name by a castle built from red clay during the Middle Ages. The village of Kokkinos Pirgos is located east of Agia Galini and north-west of Matala in the bay of Messara in southern Crete. In Kokkinos Pirgos there is a fishing port and a long sandy beach, one of the longest in Crete.
In Kokkinos Pirgos you will find a small number of hotels and apartments, restaurants and cafe's. In the nearby town of Timbaki you will find shops, banks, doctors and a post office.
From Kokkinos Pirgos it is easy to visit the Minoan Palace of Phaistos, the Minoan Villa of Agia Triada and the Roman city of Gortys. You may also use it as a base to explore the many beaches in this area of southern Crete.
There is frequent public bus service from Heraklion to Kokkinos Pirgos. |
