Rethymnon is the capital of the Rethymnon Prefecture and is located just 80 kilometers west of Heraklion and 60 kilometers east of Chania on the northern coast of Crete. At the east of Rethymnon you will find one of the largest sandy beaches in Crete, a 12 kilometer beach, and at the west there is a rocky coastline that leads to another 10 kilometer stretch of beautiful beach (Episkopi).
Rethymno is one of the most beautiful towns in Crete with its Venetial harbor and the Fortezza imposing over it that magnetize the Greek and foreign tourists. Rethymno is famous for its picturesque narrow streets, the beautiful beaches and the easy access to many sites of tourist interest, both in Rethymno prefecture and the nearby prefectures of Chania and Heraklion.
Next to Rethymnon's center the Venetian fortress Fortetza lies on a hill with a great view, which makes it worth visiting. Furthermore, you should not miss the Venetian port with the many cafe's and restaurants along the sea.
Rethymnon has direct ferry connection with Piraeus and there is frequent bus service from Heraklion and Chania.
