Greece beat Czech Republic and celebrates its victory
Heraklion, July 2, 2004.
I don't even remember when I last watched a football game. The football game of the night of July 1 was a rare exception. Greece was fighting against the Czech Republic for the Euro 2004 semi-final and every Greek person was in front of a TV. So was I...
The game ended with the Greek team winning 1 - 0 after 105 dramatic minutes. The only goal of the game was scored on the 105th minute by Dellas and it was the beginning of a huge celebration all over Greece.
The photos you will see were taken at the central square of Heraklion, Eleftherias (freedom) Square on July 2, a few minutes past midnight, after the end of the game.
As soon as the game was over, the people of Heraklion left their houses and headed to the center of Heraklion. There were already a lot of people in Eleftherias Square, watching the game from a giant video screen in front of the Nomarhia building (the building of the Heraklion Prefecture Authorities).
The streets were full with people in their cars, on motorcycles and many pedestrians raising flags. The noise from the car horns covered every other sound. There were fireworks and thousands of people were dancing, shouting and singing.
Greek people are always enthusiastic and spontaneous and the great victory of the Greek football team was an excellent chance for an all-night celebration at the streets of every town and city in Greece.
Take a look at the photos that follow. I hope they will be able to show you how special this victory was for Greece.
