Beaches in Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos has many beaches to offer, both in the town itself or its environs, 3-4 kilometres from the centre. We present all the beaches in Agios Nikolaos, running from north to south of the town:

Havania Beach in Agios Nikolaos is a lovely sandy beach on the northern outskirts of the town, on the road to Elounda.

It is an organised beach with restaurants nearby.

Ammoudi Beach is a small beach cradled in a large cove inside Agios Nikolaos.

It is an organised beach with watersports facilities. It’s small, so it may be crowded on some days.

Its advantage is that it is sheltered from the strong north winds.

Continuing along the road past this beach, you will come to the small church of Agios Nikolaos, famous for its wall paintings.

cara hotel Coral Hotel jetty

This is a concrete jetty built below the road, opposite the Coral Hotel.

As you can see from the picture, it’s not a real beach, but it is another spot where you can enjoy the sun and sea, only a short distance from the centre of Agios Nikolaos.

Kitroplateia Beach is only a short distance from the centre of Agios Nikolaos.

From the small bridge in the town centre, take the straight M. Sfakianakis Street and you will be in Kitroplateia in a few minutes.

The beach is organised and if you’re hungry there are many restaurants and tavernas in the area for an ouzo and meze (tidbits).

Ammos Beach is on the south side of Agios Nikolaos, a little past Kitroplateia, right after the Marina.

So if you have a boat, you can moor at the Marina and go for a swim right next door at Ammos Beach.

"Ammos" means sand, and this is indeed a wonderful sandy beach with umbrellas, loungers, restaurants and hotels around it.

A little further south is the Municipal Beach of the Greek National Tourism Organisation, better known as EOT.

Here is the Mini Golf for those who want a change from swimming and sunbathing.

Unlike the other beaches in Agios Nikolaos, this a pebble beach, but it is very well-looked-after, with a thick carpet of green lawn and many trees offering their cool shade in the hot summer sun of Crete.

almyros beach in agios nikolaosAlmyros Beach

Almyros Beach is the biggest and best beach in Agios Nikolaos.

It is on the south side of town, 2.5 kilometres from the centre.

It is named after the River Almyros ("Briny"), at whose mouth it lies. The river delta is a protected wetland.

Many decades ago, the women of Agios Nikolaos came here to wash their clothes in the river, among the reeds and tall eucalypts.

The beach is sandy, quite large and set in a closed cove. The water is very shallow and small children can swim here safely.

The beach is organized, with watersports facilities and a canteen selling soft drinks and fast food, while on the south side of the beach there are small hotels and apartments for rent.

ammoudara beach in agios nikolaosAmmoudara Beach

Another wonderful sandy beach only a short distance from Agios Nikolaos (4 kilometres).

Ammoudara Beach is south of Almyros. It is organised and very crowded on July and August weekends.

Around the beach you will find many tavernas and small hotels, should you decide to stay in the area.

Note. There is another Ammoudara Beach west of Heraklion.
