Akrotiri is a round-shaped peninsula north-east of Chania, where the airport of Chania is located. The area of Akrotiri has a long and rich history, lots of monuments and natural beauty.
The scenery here is so spectacular that it was used as the location for filming "Zorba the Greek". Today, it is still wonderfully unspoiled; an area of natural beauty and tranquility, approximately 10 kms from the city of Chania.
In the peninsula of Akrotiri you will find many beaches, such as Kalathas, Stavros, Chorafakia and Marathi. You will also find the 17th century monastery of Agia Triada ton Tzagarolon (Holy Trinity) and the 16th century Monastery of Kyria ton Angelon tou Gouvernetou.
One of the worth visiting places in Akrotiri peninsula are the tombs of the Venizelos family, where Eleftherios Venizelos, the famous Greek politician and Prime minister of the early 20th century has been buried.
In Akrotiri you will find hotels, apartments, cafe's, restaurants and traditional tavernas. There are frequent buses to / from Chania city and a taxi won't cost you much.
