Reviews of Mia Hara Studios
& Apartments in Sissi, Crete
Apartments Mia Hara Review - Rating 09 /10
Above Sissi, 40 km east of the Heraklion airport and 1.3 km from
the centre of the village, lies the "Mia Hara" complex of apartments
and studios, spaced elegantly around a swimming pool and lawns,
a remarkable collection of fruit trees, and complete with restaurant
and children's play area. Mia Hara is an expression of pleasure
in Greek, of satisfaction. Mia hara = it's fine!

Nikos, the owner of Mia Hara Apartments, has cultivated
a harmonious botanical garden around and between his buildings;
citrus trees, along with fragrant oleander and purple bougainvillea
provide shaded walkways, where one can walk under hanging grapes,
already plump in this hot mid-July, with berry-bushes at waist
height and charming flowers beside the pathway. I saw banana plants
and palms and lost track of how many other trees and shrubs had
found their way into this collection. It was a good surprise to
see so much care taken of a garden and lawn, knowing how much effort
this requires in a sun-drenched Cretan summer. Furthermore, it
is a sign that the owner cares for his properties and for the pleasure
of his guests.

The pool is the centrepiece of the Mia Hara apartments, and it
is deep and inviting, with a separate paddling area for the kids.
Although sun beds and umbrellas are provided, I felt that it would
be a rare pleasure to finish a swim simply lying on a towel on
the soft grass at the poolside. There is plenty of shade, too,
outside the restaurant, and, away from the pool, at Nikos' brick
barbecue area.
A basic play area, with a slide and swings is also far enough
from the pool not to give undue cause for worry for parents of
toddlers. The play area, I thought, could do with some new equipment,
but has all the basic ingredients.
There are five buildings in all, two and three stories high, designed
to offer privacy and a sense of space. I particularly liked the
symmetry of the two taller buildings, both draped in bougainvillea,
contrasting beautifully with their red-tiled vaulted roofs and
the blue Mediterranean sky.

The 27 apartments and studios, including two adapted
for the benefit of wheelchair users, are all spacious and welcoming,
catering for singles, couples and families. The
apartments are built to a very high standard and in accordance
with the latest requirements and specifications of the Greek Tourist
Board (E.O.T.). The 21 two-roomed apartments sleep up to 4 persons;
the 6 studios sleep up to 3 persons. Cots for babies can be provided
where necessary.
From the outside, the impressions of a 'homey' atmosphere in the
gardens and sheltered patios is carried through into the rooms,
which offer all the necessary comforts, large balconies on the
upper floors, and cooking facilities for those who wish to make
their own meals and snacks. The restaurant will prepare good food
from the menu, with seating inside and out. This will be a good
place to meet fellow guests and compare notes on this holiday in
Sissi, a less well known destination in Crete .
The closest beach is 300 m away and it is the beautiful sandy
beach of the hotel Kalimera Kriti. There is one more beach further
on the road to Sissi: Boufos beach, 600 m from the apartments.
In both beaches you will find sunbeds and all necessary facilities.
In the beach of Kalimera Kriti there are watersports available
and a diving center.
Sissi is 1,3 km from the Mia Hara apartments and
you can walk there (20-25 min), take a taxi (approximately 5 EUR)
or rent a car or a scooter. Sissi offers excellent seafood and
good Greek cooking in its inexpensive taverns. There are some charming
bars and cafés around the small town, some British-owned,
and the place has a relaxed ambience, far from the noise and bustle
of nearby Malia. Should you need to change pace, taxis are not
expensive to Malia, or a car or scooter can be hired in Sissi,
opening up the possibility to discover for yourself this part of
Lassithi, the eastern side of the island.
Mia Hara Apartments are a very pleasant accommodation in which
to relax or get out and about.
OUR RATING: We were tempted to
give 10 /10 to the Mia Hara Apartments but our final decision was
9 /10 due to the fact that it is not inside Sissi and, therefore
may prove less convenient for those who will not like walking the
1,3 km to Sissi or do not intend to rent a car and explore the
area. On the other hand, you shouldn't forget that Mia Hara Apartments
are much closer to the best beach in the area, the beach of Kalimera
Kriti , compared to hotels inside Sissi town.
