Departing from the town of Ierapetra, in an hour's time you can reach Chrissi island. It is named after its golden beaches and it is also known as Gaidouronissi, meaning "donkey island".
Chrissi island offers two sandy beaches on the north and on the south of the island with crystal waters, white sand and its characteristic abundance of colourful shells.
The island has flora that you cannot find anywhere else and in the centre of the island there is a cedar tree forest, protected by European Union as a natural park.
There are also two tavernas serving fresh fish and other dishes, as well as a bar on the north side of the island serving drinks and sandwiches.
Chrissi island is reachable from Ierapetra with boat services that depart in the morning and return in the afternoon offering you a worth-considering daily excursion.
